Frequently asked questions

Japan boasts a rich gift-giving culture that can be very different from what we’re used to in the West. In Japan, the act of giving can be more important than the gift itself, as it shows respect, gratitude, generosity and friendliness.

In addition to giving gifts on birthdays and for events like weddings or housewarmings, there are also two other key gift-giving traditions in Japan: Ochugen and Oseibo. Ochugen gifts are given in the summer (usually July-August) as a gesture of thanks to those you feel gratitude towards – such as family members or colleagues. Oseibo gifts are also a type of thank you gift, but these are usually given in December to those you have felt indebted to during the year.

If you’ve received a gift in Japan, you may decide to give an Okaeshi gift in return. These gifts are usually smaller and less valuable, and will commonly consist of consumable items like chocolate, sweets or spirits.

With all of these different gift-giving traditions, it can be difficult to continuously think of new gift ideas that will remain unexpected and exciting. This is where our extensive range of Japanese gifts comes in handy. If you’d like to take part in Japanese gifting traditions – or simply find gifts for those who love Japanese cuisine and culture – take a look at our collection above to find pre-made gift kits and sets that will make the entire gift-giving process a breeze.

Japanese cuisine and culture have become immensely popular in the UK, but the problem is that it can be difficult to get authentic Japanese gifts here, such as real wasabi or matcha tea sets.

We've filled this gap in the market with our huge selection of fresh Japanese ingredients and Japanese gift sets. Instead of settling for the poor-quality, inauthentic Japanese gifts you can find in other shops, discover our range of wasabi, yuzu, sushi, matcha, Japanese BBQ, and sakura-themed gifts to find the perfect present for your loved ones.
