Binchotan Charcoal
Binchotan is the ultimate barbeque charcoal due to its unique combination of power and purity. Made from dense hardwoods, binchotan coal is flame-free, high-heat charcoal that glows red hot for hours, and can even be extinguished and reused. Traditional production methods give the charcoal its famous white colouring and ironlike feel. Shop authentic Japanese charcoal right here for your Japanese Konro grill.
About our Binchotan
Binchō-tan (also called white charcoal or binchō-zumi), is a type of high-quality charcoal traditionally used in Japanese cooking. Binchotan produces minimal smoke - it's virtually smoke-free - and is even flame-free and odour-free. This means you can cook fresh foods without flavour contamination. Although slower to light than regular lump wood charcoal, it's worth the wait - and a chimney starter will help you reach a high heat from a single layer.
Why use Binchotan?
The clean, hot heat from binchotan charcoal is perfect for cooking moist tender meat. A delicious outer layer is quickly sealed, helping retain food moisture. We stock authentic Japanese binchotan charcoal, as well as more affordable binchotan briquettes - and Japanese konro grills to use it with.
Why binchotan charcoal over regular charcoal?
Binchotan charcoal burns hotter and lasts longer than your regular shop-bought ones, providing a steady heat that’s perfect for precise cooking and grilling. Unlike regular charcoal, which can impart a smoky taste and may contain additives, Binchotan is celebrated for its purity and produces minimal smoke, allowing the natural flavours of your ingredients to shine through.
