Frequently asked questions

UK wasabi refers to wasabi plants grown in the United Kingdom. Unlike the common powdered or paste versions found in stores - that often lack real wasabi - UK wasabi is authentic and delivers the true taste and strong flavour that real wasabi is known for. It is cultivated in specially managed water beds that resemble traditional Japanese wasabi farms. This brings the rich, spicy, and subtle flavour of real wasabi to lovers of spice outside of Japan, enhancing the culinary experience of both Japanese and fusion dishes.
Yes, wasabi can be grown in the UK - provided the conditions are just right for the plant to thrive. We’re proud suppliers of UK-grown British wasabi, and ensure the right climate for all of our wasabi plants for the best taste possible.
Horseradish and wasabi are often mixed up because they both have a spicy flavour, but they are different plants. Horseradish belongs to the Brassicaceae family and is mainly grown in Europe and the U.S. Wasabi is a different species from the same family but is native to Japan, and its botanical name is Wasabia japonica. The mix-up happens because outside of Japan, many "wasabi" products in restaurants and stores are actually made from horseradish that is coloured green to look like real wasabi. Real wasabi, whilst still on the hot side, has a more complex and milder heat with natural sweetness that fades quickly, while horseradish has a sharper and longer-lasting bite.
Wasabi is not in English mustard, but that spicy feeling is what connects the two. This is due to chemicals known as isothiocyanates, which are responsible for the similar sensation you feel when consuming mustard or wasabi.
