Frequently asked questions

This depends on the style of tea being prepared. A traditional Jjapanese tea set for loose leaf tea often includes a kyusu teapot and matching cups. A matcha tea set usually contains a matcha bowl (chawan), bamboo whisk (chasen), scoop (chashaku) and sometimes a whisk holder (kusenaoshi).

A regular Japanese tea set is designed for steeped teas like sencha or genmaicha. A matcha green tea set is specifically made for whisking powdered matcha with water, using tools such as a chasen whisk and chawan bowl.

You can prepare matcha in ordinary kitchenware, but using a proper matcha tea set makes it easier to achieve the smooth texture and foam associated with traditional preparation. The shape of the chawan bowl and flexibility of the bamboo whisk both make a noticeable difference.

Some glazed ceramics are dishwasher-safe, but gentle hand washing is generally recommended, especially for handmade or delicate pieces. Bamboo accessories from a matcha green tea set should always be washed by hand immediately after use with warm water only. Do not use soap or let the bamboo soak, as bamboo is a highly porous material.

Loose leaf green teas such as sencha, gyokuro, houjicha and genmaicha are all traditionally served in Japanese tea sets. Matcha should be prepared using dedicated matcha tools for the best texture and flavour. Explore our range of Japanese loose leaf teas and matcha powder for suitable pairings.
