How to tell if it is real wasabi
Real wasabi products are made from the grated stem, or rhizome, of the Wasabia japonica plant, and as such, the ingredients list will include only fresh wasabi or pure wasabi powder. Imitation wasabi, on the other hand, is usually a mixture of horseradish, mustard, starch, and green food colouring, the ingredients list will often omit Wasabia japonica entirely or include it in tiny percentages.
Real wasabi also has a complex, fresh, and earthy aroma with a hint of sweetness, and a clean, fresh heat that quickly fades and doesn't linger. Imitation wasabi often smells sharp, harsh, and overly pungent, and tends to have a one-note, overpowering heat that lingers - mainly from horseradish and mustard.
