What is Futomaki?
Futomaki is a type of thick, rolled sushi from Japan, traditionally filled with a variety of colourful ingredients. The word "futomaki" literally means "thick roll" in Japanese, distinguishing it from other types of sushi like hosomaki (thin rolls).
Futomaki can be made with a wide range of fillings, often featuring a mix of cooked and raw ingredients. Common fillings include tamagoyaki (sweet rolled omelette), kanpyo (dried gourd strips), cucumber, pickled daikon radish (takuan), shiitake mushrooms and sometimes tofu or seafood like smoked fish or crab sticks. See recipe.
Unlike many other types of sushi, futomaki usually does not contain raw fish, which makes it appealing to those who prefer cooked or vegetarian sushi.
