Matcha Latte

Matcha Latte

A creamy, energising drink that combines the vibrant green goodness of matcha with the smooth richness of milk. Perfect for starting your day or as an afternoon pick-me-up, this recipe brings a touch of Japanese tradition to your coffee routine.

Ingredients

  • 1 tsp high-quality matcha tea powder
  • 2-3 tbsp hot water (around 80°C, not boiling)
  • 200ml milk (or non-dairy alternative like oat milk or almond milk)
  • 1-2 tsp honey, maple syrup, or Okinawan brown sugar
  • A pinch of matcha tea powder for garnish (optional)

Instructions

1. Prepare the Matcha

  • Sift the matcha powder into a small bowl to avoid lumps.
  • Add 2-3 tbsp of hot water to the matcha powder (around 80°C, just under boiling) and whisk it using a bamboo whisk (or a regular small whisk).
  • Whisk in a zigzag motion until the matcha becomes frothy and smooth, ensuring there are no clumps.

2. Heat the Milk

  • Heat the milk in a small saucepan over medium heat until steaming (but not boiling).
  • Froth the milk using a milk frother or whisk to create a creamy, airy texture.

3. Combine the Matcha and Milk

  • Pour the prepared matcha into your favourite mug or glass.
  • Slowly add the steamed milk to the matcha, holding back the foam with a spoon if you want a smooth texture.
  • Stir gently to combine the matcha and milk evenly.

4. Sweeten (Optional)

  • Add honey, maple syrup, or Okinawan brown sugar to taste. Stir until dissolved.

5. Garnish (Optional)

  • Sprinkle a small pinch of matcha powder on top for an extra touch of colour and decoration.
