Red shiso furikake is a unique seasoning that’s quickly gaining popularity outside of Japan. Unlike traditional furikake, which typically includes seaweed, fish or sesame seeds, this product is made from red shiso leaves, which are part of the mint family and are prized for their vibrant colour and distinct taste, making it a great choice for vegetarians and vegans.

Red shiso is a herb commonly used in Japanese cuisine, loved for its bold crimson colour and its aromatic, slightly spicy flavour. It is the same plant used to give pickled plums (umeboshi) their characteristic colour and tartness. The leaves have a distinctive taste that falls somewhere between hibiscus (slightly sour and floral) and cinnamon (warm and earthy), with a refreshing, minty kick.

Furikake can be sprinkled on many different dishes, not just rice. It can bring a burst of flavour to noodles, grilled vegetables, potatoes, fruit salads, or cheese dishes like burrata. The pleasantly sour taste complements both savoury and lightly sweet dishes, making it a great multi-purpose seasoning.

  • Rice & Onigiri: Like traditional furikake, red shiso furikake is commonly used to sprinkle over and add colour to white rice or onigiri (Japanese rice balls). The tangy, herby notes of red shiso add a unique contrast to the simplicity of rice.
  • Pasta & Noodles: Sprinkle it on top of mushroom pasta or any noodle dishes to bring a fresh and herbal touch. It pairs especially well with earthy vegetables like mushrooms.
  • Salads & Vegetables: It’s great on salads (including fruit salads) or grilled vegetables like potatoes. It adds a bright pop of flavour that complements both leafy greens and roasted vegetables.
  • Cheese & Burrata: It makes a fantastic topping for creamy dishes like burrata, giving the dish an unexpected twist with its refreshing sourness.
  • Sauces & Dips: Incorporate it into homemade sauces or dips for a unique finishing touch. It can be added to dressings or combined with mayonnaise to make a quick, tangy dip for seafood or vegetables.
  • Grilled Meats & Tofu: Use as a seasoning for grilled tofu or meats to provide a punch of flavour that enhances the grilled taste and pairs beautifully with the smokiness of a BBQ.
