Why is clean running water is the key to growing perfect wasabi?
Water is the life blood of our wasabi farm here in the South West of England.
Wasabi naturally grows along the banks of mountain streams in Japan, where the water is cool, clean, and constantly flowing. Replicating these conditions is essential for mimicking the natural environment required for cultivation.
Clean running water helps maintain a constant temperature throughout the year, preventing the roots from overheating, which can be detrimental to the plant.
Flowing water is rich in dissolved oxygen and essential minerals. This steady supply of nutrients allows the wasabi to absorb what it needs for optimal growth, leading to a healthier plant and more flavourful rhizome.
These idyllic conditions provide a mindful soundtrack to daily life on the farm so we thought we'd share it with you in this brief video: press play and enjoy the sounds of the mineral rich flowing water nourishing the growing wasabi plants.
