A fun, compact and unique addition to the veg plot. Shishito peppers can be grown indoors or are happy planted out once hardened off and the threat of frost has passed. Well-draining, fertile soil and a sunny position in the garden are required for best results. They can grow to approximately 60cm tall. Harvest when peppers are still green, any size is good, 4-7cm long is common.
When it comes to the taste, the shishito pepper has a sweet, crisp flavour – not dissimilar to the Padron pepper. On the Scoville scale it sits at just 50 – 200 which is only mild heat but just to keep you on your toes, it is said that 1 in 10 can pack a lot more punch!
Pan fry and serve with a generous sprinkling of sea salt, or deep dry in tempura batter, they also grill well the barbecue – particularly in chicken skewers.
