Kohiki ware is a type of Japanese pottery that features a white slip glaze over a darker clay body. The white slip is applied in a way that allows the underlying clay to show through in some areas.
The vortex design is a spiral pattern created during the glazing process to add a dynamic and visually striking element to the dish. In Japanese culture, the vortex symbolises the flow of energy, water or wind, it is often associated with natural beauty and movement.
This dish is perfect for holding soy sauce, making it easy to dip sushi, sashimi or Tsukemono (Japanese pickles), that are commonly served as side dishes. The vortex dish can be used to present these pickles beautifully, highlighting their colours and textures against the white glaze.
