Elegant & fresh with rich body.
Sakura has a wonderful, elegant and fresh aroma of white flowers, sweet pear & apple, grapefruit & orange. The palate is round & smooth with good umami and food-friendly acidity, and here you get more pear & apple but also fresh strawberries and slight salinity.
It is moderately sweet (but the acidity balances this out nicely), medium-bodied with a long, juicy finish.
Sakura carries balances umami with lovely fresh fruits so we recommend pairing this sake with oily fish (mackerel, sea bream, etc.) deep-fried foods, pork, ceviche and soft cheeses.
Sakura is part of the Hyaku-ju-ro series. The name comes from a popular kabuki actor who lived in nearby Kakamigahara city. In 1912 he made a donation of 1200 cherry trees to line the banks of the city’s Sakai River. It is now tradition for people to gather at one of the city parks on the banks of the river to see the cherry blossoms’ annual bloom. Black Face was brewed to honour Hyaku-ju-ro’s generous gesture. The label on the bottles reflects the makeup worn by kabuki actors.
