These delicious oranges are named flying dragon because when the trees they grow on are bare in the winter, they look like clawed dragons with their twisted branches and long thorns.

These oranges are small, about 3-4 cm wide, with a semi thick rind that ripens from green to yellow/orange. These oranges also have a downy coating giving them a soft, velvety feel.

Under the bumpy skin, you'll find a thin, white layer and then the soft, yellow fruit. These fruit smell amazing, like a burst of citrus with an acidic, bitter taste that's a mix of lemons and grapefruit, giving them the nickname 'bitter oranges.'

These oranges are rarely eaten raw, instead, they're perfect for cooking. They make wonderful marmalades, syrups and jam and you can also make sweet, chewy snacks by candying the peel with sugar which you can add to cakes and cocktails for a tangy twist.

The rinds can also be a great substitute for lemon zest and used as a cocktail garnish.

Flying Dragon oranges are a good source of vitamin C, an antioxidant that strengthens the immune system, reduces inflammation, and boosts collagen production within the skin. The fruits also contain some vitamin A, potassium, calcium, and magnesium.

Whole, unwashed Flying Dragon oranges will keep 2 to 4 weeks when stored in the fruit drawer of the refrigerator.
